Title:

Interior Design, Senior Specialist

Textron Aviation

Briefly describe your work...

I have been involved with Aircraft Interior Design on every new Beech product since 1981. Working directly with engineers and designers provides a knowledge base for providing our customers the best interior which can be produced and still meet the FAA regulations. One of the most interesting challenges of the aviation interior designer is to digest all of the input and produce a concept that pleases everyone while meeting all federal regulations.

Why do you love your work?

I have said for many years I have the best job at our company! I am allowed to express my creativity every day with our customers and stay within the boundaries of the FAA regulations. These boundaries only make me more creative. Trends come and go, but good design lives forever. I also have the hardest job… I know the “good stuff” and have to go home and live within my own budget.

What inspires you?

I can honestly say any and everything gives me inspiration. The slightest hint can send my mind racing, I am never at a loss for ideas. It is hardest when a customer specifically requests "bad design" and no amount of diplomacy can change their mind. [I had a customer years ago who requested “bad design.” My diplomacy did not change his mind. When he saw his aircraft for the first time he told us to keep his deposit he was not taking the aircraft. This customer returned many times after this to purchase new aircraft and always asked for my advice - he did not return any other aircraft.]

Do you see an emerging aviation trend?

I see small areas of bright color and unique texture/embossing. This may be included in a seat design accent or small components on the sidewall area.

Where is your favorite place to use leather on a jet?

Seating, it’s a given. I have had customers ask for leather headliners, once I explain the weight and how many seams would be involved they backed away.

What is your favorite era of aviation?

Right now. I am so much smarter, wiser, don’t stress nearly like I used to and look at the technology we have at our finger tips. I do miss the times when we actually sat and talked with each other in lieu of texting!

Where is your favorite place in the world to travel?

Italy, Italy, Italy! Love it - the people, the food, the wine, the culture and the country.

What is your favorite place to eat in Italy?

Everywhere. I would weigh 400 pounds if I lived there. The little cafes as well as the finer restaurants are all excellent.

What are you currently reading?

The 20/20 Diet – Every year I promise myself to lose weight.

What is your travel must-have?

My most comfortable jeans and shoes. No matter where you visit these are always acceptable some time during the stay.

What do you pack in your carry on?

Itinerary, medicines, tooth brush/paste, iPad, important contact names and phone numbers – as little as possible due to the weight.

Tell us about your dream jet...

In terms of color it would be neutrals with pops of color in strategic locations, rich textures and subtle metal.

What is one thing from the ground that you wish you had in the air?

My bed pillow for long international flights – everything else can stay at home so I experience all that air travel has to offer!
