Bassano Del Grappa
Northwest of Venice, at the base of the Italian Alps, quietly rests a small medieval town that has played home to both world wars and Earnest Hemingway alike. Bassano Del Grappa, whose name namesake comes from the nearby Monte Grappa, is famously known for its beautiful covered wooden bridge that spans the Brenta River and its strong grappa liqueur. The area’s architecture reflects Bassano’s location: typical Veneto-style arcaded streets and piazzas are interspersed with alpine wooden balconies, and some of the hostelries have a decidedly Austrian flavour. Its also famous for its rich history in leather. Bassano is home to our fifth generation tannery and dear friends at the Adelaide and the Finco Family.
While Bassano Del Grappa may be lesser known by name than some of its Italian counterparts, this intimate community in Northern Italy has confidently created leathers we have all interacted with around the world. Bassano’s secret to leather is both time and the water. With more than 150 years of leather history, the Finco family and local craftsman have worked tirelessy to perfect their art of creating the finest leather in the world. And the water, which flows directly from the Alps, plays an invaluable role due to its natural purity.
Bassano’s beauty comes both from its history and its present progress, while somehow finding a way to seem removed from both. Its a special place, and like most things uniquely Italian, it finds its charm in being both.
